Rereading Ferdinand de Saussure: The Linguistic Sign
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to revisit the Saussurean notion of the linguistic sign, founded on the association between signifier and signified, on the basis of the discovery of Saussure’s manuscripts in his family home in Geneva in 1996.
We are interested in discussing the double conceptualizations of the sign. On the one hand, it is considered a closed unit in the Course in General Linguistics, but the negativity that lies at the basis of the relations between signifiers and signifieds enables a principle of contextuality that has been highlighted by François Rastier.
On the other hand, the linguistic sign is the result of a process of abstraction and decontextualization that cuts it off from its material basis. However, prosody, voice, and sounds impose themselves and shape meaning in a communicative situation.
