Where Do They Go? Counterpublic Itineraries and Plurilogical Pathways
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper focuses on the wide range of “public” activities deployed by oppressed people in order to confront the multiple forms of oppression that shape our lives. Critical Theory understands these contestatory actions as claims for social justice. Within this broader debate, I will examine two conceptualizations developed by Nancy Fraser in her theorization of questions of justice in contemporary democracies.
One of these conceptualizations is “participatory parity” and the other is the “counterpublic sphere”. The latter is presented as central for accounting for the groups that take part in the discursive interaction required by the language that this feminist philosopher calls precisely “participatory parity”. I propose a close reading of what is understood by the “public” and by “publicity”, since this is fundamental for a critical perspective on the concept of parity, described as “an idiom of public deliberation and contestation about matters of justice” (Fraser, 2001: 35).
It is necessary to rethink some of the arguments Fraser uses to support her understanding of the mechanisms that help us move toward societies guided by equity, both in material terms and in terms of cultural recognition. Therefore, I will problematize alternative versions of the “public” and some aspects of “counterpublicity”. Drawing on the contributions of María Lugones and Joshua Price, I will point to alternative directions for studying, accounting for, and moving within communicative spheres that could offer political enrichments for the diverse modes of confrontation embodied in transnational and local democratic struggles.
