Tradition and Rupture in Ramón Alberto Pérez’s Short Fiction
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the 1960s, a change took place in the literature of Argentina’s interior. Costumbrista aesthetics moved beyond picturesque regionalism and belatedly incorporated the linguistic concerns of the avant-garde. This change gradually appeared in short fiction from Tucumán.
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, through the analysis of discursive strategies arising from the textual subject, as well as the circumstances of enunciation and production, that the short fiction of the Tucumán writer Ramón Alberto Pérez is in a transitional stage. This can be explained by two main reasons.
First, the writer under study leaves behind traditional picturesque regionalism and turns toward deeper, more existential themes, in keeping with his pessimistic conception of the world. He is obsessively concerned with human solitude and lack of communication.
Second, his writing gradually becomes self-conscious, although it does not become fully metadiscursive and critical, as is characteristic of the Latin American avant-garde after the Boom. Rather, it emerges as the product of a distressing reality.
