Abstract

The objective of this paper is to approach the functionality of a specific type of enclosure present at Campo del Pucará, Department of Andalgalá, Catamarca. The study began with the hypothesis that these structures may have been corrals, as initially proposed by Tartusi and Núñez Regueiro (1998).

This work is approached from a geoarchaeological perspective that seeks to contribute to archaeological interpretations. Accordingly, the thematic axes considered were the factors associated with preferences in the selection of settlement locations and the specific characteristics these places present. A pedological analysis was also carried out both outside and inside the enclosures in order to determine similarities and differences between them. Finally, the associated cultural elements were assessed.

The evidence analyzed allows us to conclude that these enclosures may have functioned as domestic units, since the arrangement and association of certain materials suggest that these structures concentrated domestic activities.
