Memories and Peronism: Narrating the Historical Experiences of Railway Workers in Jujuy, Argentina
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article is framed within the premises of oral history. Following the methodological problems and guidelines established by this perspective, it proposes an approach to the narratives of railway workers concerning the various historical processes linked to their company and to their participation in it. The objective is to determine the characteristics of the particular ways in which these workers remember and narrate their experience within the specific context of the province of Jujuy, with special emphasis on the weight of Peronism in their memories.
Their memories are examined in relation to the nationalization of the railways and the establishment of strategies strongly oriented toward workers’ welfare; the transformation of the relationship between the State, the labor force, and capital during the subsequent military dictatorships; and the privatization of railway services.
These policies left a strong imprint on railway workers as a whole. The experiences of prosperity during the years of first Peronism, the military governments that followed, and the removal of the railways from state control remained “engraved” in their memory in particular ways, on the basis of their specific historical experience as railway workers.
