Abstract

This paper addresses one of the dimensions of analysis proposed in a research study on the centrality assumed by the contents and/or teaching methodology of the natural sciences in teaching practice.

The study aims to identify the conceptualizations and valuations that teachers assign to contents and methods, to detect the socioeducational and cultural factors that intervene in them, and to characterize the positions teachers adopt in their praxis.

In this qualitative inquiry, the case study approach was chosen in order to allow a systematic, detailed, in-depth, and intensive examination of the phenomenon. The setting is a school where the presence of the natural environment is significant. Information was obtained through classroom observations, interviews, and document analysis.

This paper presents the analysis of curricular documents, focused on the Natural Sciences area and particularly on the case of Chemistry, within the general context of the curricular conception of the Educational Transformation. The analysis highlights the conceptions underlying the contents and the methodological guidelines proposed as “innovative”. As in any curriculum, these guidelines seek to orient the nature of the relationships that teachers establish with the knowledge to be taught and with the way of teaching it.
