The European Semiotic Heritage and Its Expression in Rhetoric: Colonial and Postcolonial Mexico

Abstract
The question of the semiotic inheritance in the Mexican context can be approached either from a historical perspective or from a disciplinary one. In this brief essay, we trace the influence of European semiotics as it is manifested in poetics and rhetoric, especially the latter.
To this end, we examine the circulation of works on rhetoric by different authors in order to determine which authors had the strongest presence. We also seek to identify which European countries and cities exerted the greatest influence on colonial Mexico, including the beginnings of independent Mexico.
To carry out this study, we undertook research in the reserved collections of the Palafoxiana Library in Puebla and of the Autonomous University of Puebla.
