Impacto e integración entre la medicina alternativa y la convencional

Resumen

Introducción: Se verifica una insatisfacción creciente con respecto a la medicina convencional (MC) que determina una mayor utilización por parte de los pacientes de alguna forma de medicina alternativa y/o complementaria (MAC). El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el impacto y la integración entre la MAC y la MC a través del análisis del comportamiento de los médicos respecto a la MAC y de la magnitud de la bibliografía MAC en la biblioteca médica hegemónica. Materiales y Métodos: Para evaluar el comportamiento de los médicos se realizó un meta-análisis de 17 encuestas relevantes en este tema. Se recurrió a una metodología bibliométrica para estimar la magnitud de la bibliografía MAC, clasificada de acuerdo al tesauro MESH, en el total de la base MEDELINE y en los años 1985 y 1999. Resultados: Sobre un total de 5577 entrevistados, el porcentaje de respuesta fue del 65.8%, constatándose que en 4 encuestas el 57% de los médicos utilizan alguna forma de MAC. En 13 encuestas, el 62.5% de los médicos habían derivado pacientes; en 7, el 23% practicaba y en 3, el 26.5% estaba entrenado en alguna forma de MAC. Las citas sobre MAC representan aproximadamente el 0.42% de la base MEDLINE y se observó un aumento de las publicaciones MAC entre 1885 y 1999. Discusión y Conclusiones: De acuerdo a los resultados de esta investigación, resulta evidente un importante impacto e integración de la MAC dentro del sistema de la MC, el que se traduce tanto por la actitud en general positiva de los médicos respecto a estas prácticas, como por un incremento del número de publicaciones sobre esta temática citadas en la base de datos MEDLINE. Se discuten distintos aspectos de esta integración y se propone una agenda de temas a examinar que favorezcan la misma.
