Social Actors in Rural Tucumán According to Nineteenth-Century “Scientific Culture”

Abstract

Granillo, Bousquet, and Rodríguez Marquina published important works in which they expressed suggestive appreciations of a Tucumán shaken by the transformations of the mid-nineteenth century. Today, these works constitute a documentary corpus of great value.

In this paper, their works are taken up as sources of information in order to identify the social actors of rural Tucumán and to understand their living conditions. At the same time, however, the perspectives and “points of view” of the three authors on the social reality they describe are also analyzed.

In this regard, I consider that a cognitive structure common to all three authors intervened in the representations of that world as it was perceived and reflected by them: “scientific culture”.
