Abstract

The central objective of this paper is to demonstrate, through discourse analysis, that the Peruvian chronicler Guaman Poma de Ayala left in his work Nueva corónica y buen gobierno not only a record of everyday life during the colonial period, but also texts that reveal his skill as a writer in using writing, a Spanish legacy, to constitute through it a front of resistance against colonization and a way of granting permanence to the values proper to Andean culture.

The discourse analysis is based on the proposals of Émile Benveniste and Mikhail Bakhtin, emphasizing the subjectivity of language and the dialogism that emerges from the interaction of different voices.

The chronicler achieves a communicative process that attempts to establish a dialogue between cultures, although this dialogue is not fully accomplished. Nevertheless, his discourse inaugurates in the Andean region what we currently recognize as the heterogeneity of the American subject.
