Abstract
In the context of the decline in infant mortality (IM) in Argentina, limitations in vital statistics have hindered the assessment of inequalities across groups defined by social determinants of health, such as parental educational attainment. Therefore, the aim of this study is to estimate these inequalities in order to generate information that enables their monitoring. To this end, an indirect demographic technique known as the Brass method is applied to estimate infant mortality among children of mothers with different educational levels.
Key findings indicate that women in Argentina have progressively attained higher levels of education. Fertility rates show an overall declining trend but remain polarized across social strata, with higher levels among lower-income groups. In this context, the reduction in infant mortality has not been uniform across maternal educational levels. Although the decline has been greater among children of less-educated mothers, these children continue to face nearly twice the risk of dying compared to those born to more-educated mothers. This risk was higher in earlier generations and has decreased over time.
Finally, while the gap in infant mortality has narrowed, inequalities in the risk of infant death associated with maternal educational level still persist.
