The Presence of Lyric Poetry by Women in the Magazine “Jujuy” (1936–1940)

Abstract

Tracing literary production in Jujuy is an arduous and difficult task, mainly because there is no physical space in which the entirety of the province’s bibliographic production has been preserved.

It is also difficult to record works produced by women, especially because no books by women authors appear to have been published before the 1930s. The first recorded work published by a woman dates from 1934. There are, however, periodical publications, such as newspapers and magazines, that have hosted women’s voices over time and, although the work is exhausting, it is by no means fruitless.

Although only two works published by women are known for the decade from 1934 to 1944, the presence of women stands out in the pages of the magazine Jujuy, whose first issue appeared in September 1936 and whose last issue was published in February 1940.

The objective of this paper is to explore the thematic and formal characteristics of the lyric poetry written by women in this cultural publication, which circulated in the province in the mid-1930s.

As a result of this inquiry, we will attempt to answer two major questions. First, to what extent these productions are inserted within a literary tradition, and also what proposals for renewal and rupture they attempt. Second, we are interested in offering an answer regarding the social place occupied by women within the written production of the period.
