The Semiotic(s) of the Visual Image

Abstract

Many of the problems affecting the semiotic study of visual images originate in the attempt to account for their variety from a single point of view. However, the different mental operations required to identify, recognize, and interpret them demand a specific treatment in each case, depending on whether they are purely qualitative, figurative, or normative visual perceptual proposals, or—as is most often the case—whether they integrate these three aspects in different proportions.

In this sense, without submitting to a dogmatic exegesis, this paper explores, on the basis of the Peircean triad of iconic qualisigns, iconic sinsigns, and iconic legisigns, as well as contemporary cognitive research, especially D. Marr’s theory of vision, the differential and necessary foundations for a rigorous study of the process of meaning construction in these three major groups of material visual images.
