Tradition and Rock Nacional: The Case of La Renga

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the use of tradition in Argentine rock nacional as a resource for positioning oneself within current cultural relations. We consider the discursive productions and performances of the rock band La Renga in order to examine how relations between a meaningful past and the present are constructed. The appeal to the past operates in two directions: with respect to the history of rock nacional, on the one hand, and with respect to the history of the band, on the other.

Although disputes over what rock is have existed since the emergence of the phenomenon, they have intensified in a context marked by the expansion of the commercial apparatus of rock. Within this framework, resorting to the past constitutes a strategy for marking a distance from the culture industry.
