Life and Death at Pucará de Yacoraite: A Human Osteological Study
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a study of human skeletal remains excavated by Pedro Krapovickas between 1950 and 1960. The materials come from two habitation sectors of the “Pucará de Yacoraite” (Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy), where burials of adults and immature individuals were found.
The aim is to characterize the lifestyle of these individuals, taking into account the possible relationships between subsistence economy and degree of adaptation to the environment. Individual assignment of skeletal elements was carried out using abundance indicators. Sex and age-at-death estimations were made in order to generate, for exploratory purposes, a demographic profile of the settlement. Stature estimation and the analysis of osteopathological markers also made it possible to characterize the group biologically.
The results indicate a total of forty-eight individuals of both sexes, with medium to low adult stature. Age-at-death data reflect high pre- and perinatal mortality, as well as a peak of adult mortality between twenty and thirty years of age. A socially constrained situation is inferred, involving vigorous use of the body, without marked differences between the sexes.
