The Pin-Pin: Between the Foreign and One’s Own
Main Article Content
Abstract
Reading a cultural text, whatever its type, not only makes it possible to understand the overall configuration of a culture; it can also serve as a privileged path for identifying the transformations that such a culture may have undergone.
Northwestern Argentina is culturally characterized by the preservation of ancestral traditions and customs that contributed to the configuration of the idiosyncrasy and worldview of ancient civilizations and that, in one way or another, have been transmitted from generation to generation.
For this paper, we have chosen a text originally characterized by ritual: the Pin-Pin, a mixture of sacred and profane cultural symbols of clearly tribal roots, whose ceremonial features have been preserved in oral memory. These features can be recovered through a Lotmanian semiotic reading in order to generate new intercommunications.
A series of accounts was collected in several localities of the Jujuy Ramal region and in the capital city concerning what the Pin-Pin means, in order to account for its transculturation after the arrival of the Spaniards.
