Abstract

This paper studies the evolution of the use of abbreviations in five wills from Jujuy archives dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The frequency of abbreviations recorded in our corpus of analysis, together with the limited bibliography available on the subject, led us to undertake this study. Its main objective is to observe the evolution of these forms by comparing the wills under analysis with current usage.

Methodologically, we have followed the classificatory system used by Millares Carlo for the paleographic study of medieval and Renaissance texts.

The comparison of the forms, taking into account the procedures used in the formation of abbreviations, makes it possible to classify them as follows: a) evolved forms; b) regressive forms; c) forms fallen into disuse; d) preserved forms; and e) vacillating forms.

Our conclusions suggest that the few rules of abbreviation existing in seventeenth-century written language may have been transmitted through oral tradition and that, in the following century, even though the Royal Spanish Academy had already regulated their use, abbreviation procedures continued to depend largely on the scribe’s cultural background.
