The Disappeared, Passions, and Discursive Identities in the Argentine Press (1976–1983)

Abstract
The treatment given by the Argentine press to the issue of the disappeared during the military dictatorship of 1976–1983 is highly complex. The emergence of the disappeared as an issue on the social agenda, together with its conditions of truth, brought into confrontation the fictional construction of society produced by the military narrative and the newspapers’ modes of exposition. Could the disappeared be named? Under what form of discursive identity could they appear?
This situation also involved the ordinary reader, the citizen, who had a direct and non-mediated experience of the events. This struggle over the definition and content of a word, and over the identity of an unprecedented social actor in national history, violently put into crisis the forms of enunciation and the modeling of informational discourse.
In short, the case of the disappeared is configured as a true “discursive device” because it is closely linked to military power, to the power of the media as operators of visibility, and to the power of the relatives to reject, deny, and finally transform the prevailing regime of enunciation.
