HIV/AIDS in the University Setting: An Opportunity for the Exercise of Human Rights. What Is the Situation in Our Country?
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper, framed within an exploratory line of research, seeks to examine the current state of progress of the HIV/AIDS issue as a problem and object of study addressed through research and extension activities in university settings in our country.
More specifically, and delimiting the object of study, the aim is to determine the concrete degree of importance assigned to research and extension actions related to this issue in the field of the social sciences, and not only in the medical sciences, taking into account that this degree of importance is linked to the fulfillment of human rights.
To this end, several state universities offering degree programs in both the medical sciences and the social sciences were selected as the setting, through random sampling.
As evidence for analysis, the study considered the reports submitted to society and to the scientific community by the agencies responsible for programs addressing the problem, over a five-year period, 1995–2000, as well as the reports of the selected universities during the same period.
The essential correlation between the production of knowledge, its dissemination, and its application through extension activities by national universities; its reflection in technical reports from national and international agencies; and indicators related to human development constitute the components for the triangulation and analysis of the results that this research will provide.
