Abstract
This paper analyzes some of the relations that can be established between the processes of urbanization and industrialization and the evolution of the Argentine regional system, with particular emphasis on developments over the last two decades.
During this stage, a turning point appears to have occurred in the direction of domestic-market-oriented development, severely limited by the transnationalizing character of the international economy. The opening of the economy and the virulent regressive redistribution of income, expressed as tendencies, condemned this model to decline by removing its bases of support.
The deindustrializing character of this stage has had, and will surely continue to have, repercussions on the regional and urban dynamics of the country. This follows from the analysis of the last three censuses, which reveal the apparent contradiction between the relative increase in the population of the extra-Pampean or peripheral regions and the decline of their economies.
