Environmental Education and Participation in the Laguna de Pozuelos Biosphere Reserve

Abstract
This paper presents the research results of the first pilot project on environmental education funded by UNESCO in the Laguna de Pozuelos Biosphere Reserve. The aim of the project is to achieve effective protection of the biodiversity of the Reserve’s core area through joint activities involving local populations, researchers, and central institutions.
The achievements of the project include advances in knowledge of the shores, ecotones, climatic cycles, grazing practices, and local inhabitants living near Laguna de Pozuelos; ethnobotanical and ethnozoological information on the core area and nearby piedmonts; and the participation of local children from two nearby schools.
The methods employed included direct and participant observation in fieldwork and field interviews; workshops carried out both in classrooms and in the field; inventories of flora and fauna species conducted with children; and comparative matrices for the evaluation of field data.
