An Approach to Modern Folk Music from Jujuy: Predominant Images in Song Lyrics

Abstract
The construction “Jujuy folklore” designates, in everyday usage, certain specific musical practices. It refers to a heterogeneous group of artists, poetics, and musical genres. However, this heterogeneity is perceived as a unity on the basis of dissimilar criteria, according to features considered characteristic of the geographical and human environment.
In this paper, we seek to analyze the constituents of “jujeñidad” from the perspective of modern folklore; that is, the identity discourse promoted by this field, through the analysis of the rhetorical elements that characterize song lyrics. The corpus consists of two songbooks: the one published by Ediciones Ideas Sueltas and Todo Jujuy en canciones, published by Cor-For Ediciones.
The objective is to describe the predominant images in the rhetoric of the lyrics of modern Jujuy folklore and their relations of rupture or continuity with those of modern Argentine folklore as a whole.
