Philosophy and Philosophers in the Face of Contemporary Reality

Abstract

This article examines the contemporary situation of philosophy within a context marked by the cultural, cognitive, and social fragmentation associated with postmodernity. This transformation affects both the traditional unity of the philosophical field and the identity and functions of those who practice it. Several disciplines formerly included within philosophy have become autonomous, while philosophers increasingly specialize or participate in interdisciplinary programs. The author identifies five prevailing tendencies: the predominance of the critical function over foundational projects, the preference for procedural approaches, an emphasis on problematization rather than answers, cognitive diagnosis instead of theoretical-practical guidance, and the emergence of styles of thought in place of philosophical schools. Despite these changes, philosophy retains two fundamental features: the radical critical exercise of reason and the profound interpretation of the culture of its time. The relaxation of traditional criteria of rationality opens new possibilities for formulating problems, incorporating phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches, and integrating cognitive and practical dimensions. Finally, the article highlights the problem of meaning and the recovery of historicity as horizons from which philosophy may address difference, overcome nihilistic indifference, and renew its engagement with contemporary reality.
