Critical Analysis of the Notions of Context and Signification: Their Contributions to the Study of Cultural Phenomena of Folkloric Character
Main Article Content
Abstract
For some time, the term "context" has constituted a problem in the social sciences for young researchers who use it. One possible reason is that the term forms part of the language of a certain intellectual and academic milieu, where it has found wide resonance and circulation. It therefore becomes necessary, in any scientific work, to clarify what kind of context is being referred to in each case.
Since this issue has been addressed by various scholars in different articles, this paper attempts to review the diverse concepts of context as they have been treated by the discipline of folklore since the term entered the theoretical scene. It offers a synthetic view of these contributions to the study of cultural phenomena of folkloric quality.
The paper agrees with the position of Relevance Theory, which supports the thesis that it is the utterance that constructs the context. This makes it possible to propose a way of recovering the meaning of narrative material, as well as of other kinds of material, and of the various contexts through verbal material produced in interview situations.
