Tenderos and Pulperos: Urban Retailers in Salta and Jujuy in the Nineteenth Century
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper analyzes the forms of organization of urban retail businesses in the markets of the cities of Salta and San Salvador de Jujuy during the nineteenth century. To this end, it identifies the different types of establishments open to the public, some of the strategies they carried out in their businesses, their links and/or conflicts with large merchants, as well as the changes they underwent during a period marked by political and military turmoil.
In addition, the growing number of shops, pulperías, and other establishments bears witness to the economic dynamism that these cities managed to maintain despite the conflicts of the early nineteenth century. These establishments also serve as indicators of the intensity and potential of urban sociability, a variable that is also taken into account in this study.
