Discourse, Communication, and Power: Masks, Distinction, and Social Exclusions

Abstract
The discovery of the mutilated image of Christ in its sanctuary, located in the highlands of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, shocks the parishioners of the nearby locality. After the initial moment of astonishment, a series of assumptions arise concerning the perpetrators of the act, as well as subsequent discussions regarding whether the image should be restored or replaced.
Various narratives emerge around the making of the original figure of Christ and that of the Virgin, which was located in a nearby chapel. Reference is also made to the actions of a priest, a representative of Liberation Theology, who had been questioned some years earlier, and continues to be questioned even today by a sector of local and provincial society.
The discourse of oral narrative on this subject can show us the conceptualization of part of “social reality”. It is of interest to observe how oral narratives reveal, in their semantic content, a way of seeing the world. At the same time, through their formal organization, they also structure a way of categorizing the social world.
Categories, schemes, and models are the central concepts that guide our inquiry and make it possible to draw inferences about local power relations. The references that appeared in informal conversations also help explain the discursive position of the speakers. The analysis of these references provides data that can be related to the direct or symbolic action of various disciplinary institutions operating in our society.
