Abstract

We present here the results of the anatomofunctional study performed on four skeletal assemblages from Quebrada de Humahuaca: Tilcara (Mulqui and La Falda), Pucará de Tilcara (Barrio Corrales), and Yacoraite (Pucará de Yacoraite). Early to Late Ceramic, Inca and Early Native-Spanish Contact Periods are represented. The objective of this study was considered in order to evaluate possible relations to subsistence patterns, feeding habits, and health. General and cumulative stress indicators, episodic stress indicators, and inespecifi c stress indicators (porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia, infectious diseases, trauma, degenerative conditions, and dental affections), were studied. Bone markers are related with sex dimorphism, mortality, and body use in a wide spectrum of activities, in order to look for variations through time between skeletal subsets, and to explore social stratifi cation and differential access to alimentary resources among the individuals from prehistoric societies at Quebrada de Humahuaca. High percentage of mortality in child hood is observed in Late Ceramic Period assemblages. No variation in the expression of sexual dimorphism through time has been observed in estimated statures. Low percentages of indicators
of general and episodic stress and high percentages of degenerative conditions and dental pathologies were observed. These results suggest to us that markers studied agree with awaited for agricultural-pastoralist subsistence economies in Quebrada de Humahuaca, and the increased consumption of carbohydrates and abrasive contaminants in the meals.
