Abstract

The aim of my paper is to discuss the relevance of the Swedish Chaco-Cordilleras expedition for the ethnography of the Argentine Puna. For a critical reading of Eric von Rosen’s work “En förgången värld“ I take my own ethnographic experience in an neighbouring area of the Andean highlands (Puna de Atacama) into account. The analysis elucidates three important contributions of von Rosen’s book. On the one hand, it is a document of the European perception of the landscape in this part of the Andes. On the other hand, the book offers a series of details about the mode of living of the indigenous inhabitants of the puna at the beginning of the XXth century. Beyond that, it is also a testimony of the encounter of two cultures out of unequal positions of power.
