I HAVE ASKED THE INDIANS TO KNOW ABOUT THEIR BELIEFS ON RUINS
Abstract
From an analysis of a text by Boman (1908) we ask ourselves again about the relationship between archeologists and a community, considering the representations each one has of the other.
The images each one has of the other are always subjective and conceived through their knowledge not only of themselves but of the world. That is why their identity is shown through them.
If we assume that image systems relate people to their environment and consequently they can affect their behavior.
We will have to take into consideration this connection when we plan our research, since in the world of relations we have with "other"; they depended on a great extentd on our object of study or consider that this object of study still has symbolic relations with the people that live in this region?
When we are hired to work, do we just do our technical work or do we try to understand and interpret these relationships?
Since the significant places depend on sociocultural variables: significant uses, names, associations and preferences, as well as a visual and perspective structure.
How do archeologists prepare ourselves to do field work? Our training permits us to see the complex fabric of interaction that rises from our contact with each other and "others".Up to what extent are we conscious that our work can affect not only a tangible patrimony of different communities but also intangible patrimony? We consider that it is necessary, to reflect about the ethical dimension of our profession a 100 years after the Swedish expedition
