Abstract

This paper constitutes a preliminary contribution to CIUNSa Project No. 1408, whose main objective is to survey and explore the dramaturgy of Salta from its origins to the present. This research is linked to previous studies on the history of theatre in Salta, although in this case it is approached from a comparative perspective.

Our study focuses on Francisco Feliciano Mateo’s unpublished dramatic text Esteco, written in 1976, and on the discursive channels adopted by the cultural memory of the region, since the legend of Esteco has also been treated from the perspective of narrative in Fernando Figueroa’s La mujer de piedra (1974).

A contrastive study makes it possible to evaluate the correspondences and divergences between both discourses, as well as their relations with historical discourse and oral tradition.

Finally, a brief reflection is offered on the intrinsic values of Esteco as a dramatic work and on its relevance for an ideological reading of the imaginary in its context of production.
