Ethical Rationality: A Responsible Rational Action
Main Article Content
Abstract
We mean by ethical rationality an intersubjective rationality that sets the basis for responsibility for common human actions. An ethical response from communicative action allows us to institutionalize interests concerning everyone who shares an authentic human vocation.
Although this rationality is made evident through an argumentative discourse—in which the interlocutor brings forward the reasons that support his/her action—it does not mean that ethical discourse could refuse to listen to some of the persons affected by it, or limit their argumentative capacity, or exclude them from the argumentative process; this would mean rejecting the logic and the proper aim of argumentation because of subjective motives that do not dare to submit themselves to the canon of intersubjectivity.
Ethical rationality supposes the recognition of human beings—interlocutors—as persons and the institutionalization of responsible actions, neither individual nor strategic, but actions that recognize the consequences of decisions, attention to generalizable interests, and commitment to those affected.
