WHERE DO THEY GO? COUNTERPUBLIC ITINERARIES AND PLURILOGIC PATHWAYS

Abstract

This papers aims at looking at the wide range of “public” activities that are deployed by the oppressed to face the multiple oppressions that mold our lives.

Understanding such contestatory actions as claims for social justice is one of the ways that Critical Theory thinks through issues at stake in this article. Within a larger debate I will examine two conceptualizations provided by Nancy Fraser in her theorizing of social justice in contemporary democracies.

One of the conceptualization is that of “participatory parity” while the other is that of “counterpublic sphere”. It is the latter that is presented as key to define groups that take part in the discursive interaction required for that language that the above named feminist philosopher calls participatory parity. I propose a deep reading of what “publicity” is about as it is central for a critical perspective on the concept of parity that is described as “an idiom of public contestation and deliberation about matters of justice” (Fraser, 2001: 35).

It is necessary to re-think some of the arguments that Fraser puts forth to backing up her understanding of the mechanisms that would help us move towards societies guided by equity in terms of material distribution and cultural recognition. Therefore, I will problematize alternative versions of the “public” and some aspects of her theorizing on “counterpublicity”. By drawing on María Lugones’s and Joshua Price’s works, I will point to an/other direction to study, convey and move within communicative spheres that may carry out enriching politics to the different contestatory modes that are embodied in current local and transnational democratic struggles.
