Towards a Praxis of the Image

Abstract
This paper set out to analyze the effects produced by television on the perception, interpretation, and cognition of students entering the Faculty of Humanities at the National University of Salta, Argentina. Interest in this issue arose from the difficulties shown by students in the course Idioma Nacional in recognizing and producing argumentative academic texts.
The study reached the following conclusion: there is a perverse dialectic. On the one hand, audiovisual texts shape forms of perception, interpretation, and cognition in students that come into conflict with those associated with the logosphere, or orality, and the graphosphere, or writing. On the other hand, the deconstruction of such audiovisual texts is indispensable, since they form part of our students’ encyclopedia. Paradoxically, this deconstructive reading requires competencies developed within the linguistic register.
We believe that the interaction between audiovisual and linguistic literacy could constitute an alternative pedagogical proposal for addressing this problem.
