Ethnographic Panpipes: Diversity and Musical Structure in the Puna and Quebrada Areas of Jujuy (1986–1989)

Abstract
This paper deals with ethnographic panpipes from the Central Andean region, grouped under the generic name of Sikus. The central problem is to determine whether they possess a defined musical structure, with the aim of understanding their functioning and avoiding the distortion of knowledge in pedagogical tasks.
The information comes from an experience carried out over a three-year period in Argentina, in the geographical area of the Puna, through interviews with musicians and comparative measurements of instruments. The analysis is mainly valid for these coordinates of time and space.
Nine types of instruments were considered in relation to the number of tubes, their tuning, and their register. These instruments were classified into three families.
