Reading Pierre Bourdieu and His Readers: Lessons and Misunderstandings from France and the United States

Abstract
This paper proposes some elements for the interpretation of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology by exploring the folds of the readers and readings of his work in France and in the United States. It seeks to situate these readings within some of the conditions in which they were produced and in which readers themselves were positioned, linking certain meanings attributed to Bourdieu’s texts with these operations of reading, which are inseparably intellectual and affective.
Thus, both involvement in a field in which Bourdieu held a position and adopted particularly conflictive position-takings, and the frequently ignored distance from the other’s intellectual context, viewed from a dominant position, conspire in each case against the understanding of an innovative sociological work.
